Today the RI Wiffleball Association designated Terence Turnquist for assignment and promoted Triple-A Beverly OF prospect Mike Soder to the opening day roster. In shocking news, Soder immediately told the commissioner “Thanks, but no thanks.” The veteran minor league player declined the promotion while telling RhodeIslandWiffleball.BlogSpot.com
“I have had a rough few weeks. Without saying too much I think my playing days are over. It’s a lot to handle for someone who has played this game for such a long time. …
While my situation is not on the level of being an everyday Major League player like the great Lorenzo Medina, Matt Godino, or even John McGovern and the rest of the guys, I know what it’s like to hear that it’s past your time.
I have been a great ball player. Most guys would give their left nut to be able to say they played at the major league level. I have played in the bigs and spent plenty of time on farm team here in Beverly. Looking back at what I have done, I can say that I achieved my goal of being a professional wiffleball player. Now it’s time to put other priorities first. When I got the call from the great commissioner to come play in opening day, I was ecstatic, but then looking at a picture of Lauren in my room today, I just realized there are more important things in life than hitting a plastic ball while six other guys make fun of you for being in love. Tomorro (while sitting with Lauren and missing out on opening day) … I will consider myself… The Luckiest Man on the face of the earth…”
Commissioner Thompson, was not the least bit surprised by the move. “Inviting him was more out of sympathy for the guy. I mean he clearly doesn’t have the talent to play at this level on an everyday basis and I knew his heart wasn’t in it, but I figured I’d give the kid a break and let him come up to the show and try to impress some of the guys. But our scouts and players in Beverly have told us, this is no longer the Soder we’re used to seeing”

Terence still day to day
In light of the pending injury to Terence Turnquist, the RI Wiffleball Association is expected to begin the regular season with an open roster spot. That probably means one of the Triple A players in Beverly will be competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster Saturday.
"It's unfortunate for Terence, but yeah, you know it could be a blessing for another guy kind of deal," AJ Brunetti said. "It will get one of those guys in Beverly a little more chance to play and that can only help them. For any guy who gets thrust into the situation of more playing time in the bigs, it's up to that guy to capitalize on it."
Brunetti himself has a made a decent living being the last guy on the RI Wiffleball roster the past 8 years. If someone gets hurt or pulls a High School Matt Godino, where he begs the the commish to let a girl play, someone else gets the call up.
"That basically is how my whole season went 8 years ago," Brunetti said. "I got called up to play at the Office and Thompson Garden the first time because of Godino kept begging girls to play, it was basically a carnival ride from there. Godino eventually got stopped bringing women to a MANs game, and I sort of was able to throw up enough hate to my opponents that they eventually let me stick around regardless of my game.”
"That's pretty much how it goes," he continued. "I'll take being in the big leagues, hanging out with Thompson, Medina, McGovern any way I can get it. You know, you don't want to see other guys get hurt, especially teammates, but such is life, especially in wiffleball. For years and years, players have been given opportunities because of other players' misfortunes. Certainly, we all have learned from the Matt Godino story."
The Commissioner is expected to make an announcement of which player if any, will be called up this afternoon... Stay tuned...
