In light of the pending injury to Terence Turnquist, the RI Wiffleball Association is expected to begin the regular season with an open roster spot. That probably means one of the Triple A players in Beverly will be competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster Saturday.
"It's unfortunate for Terence, but yeah, you know it could be a blessing for another guy kind of deal," AJ Brunetti said. "It will get one of those guys in Beverly a little more chance to play and that can only help them. For any guy who gets thrust into the situation of more playing time in the bigs, it's up to that guy to capitalize on it."
Brunetti himself has a made a decent living being the last guy on the RI Wiffleball roster the past 8 years. If someone gets hurt or pulls a High School Matt Godino, where he begs the the commish to let a girl play, someone else gets the call up.
"That basically is how my whole season went 8 years ago," Brunetti said. "I got called up to play at the Office and Thompson Garden the first time because of Godino kept begging girls to play, it was basically a carnival ride from there. Godino eventually got stopped bringing women to a MANs game, and I sort of was able to throw up enough hate to my opponents that they eventually let me stick around regardless of my game.”
"That's pretty much how it goes," he continued. "I'll take being in the big leagues, hanging out with Thompson, Medina, McGovern any way I can get it. You know, you don't want to see other guys get hurt, especially teammates, but such is life, especially in wiffleball. For years and years, players have been given opportunities because of other players' misfortunes. Certainly, we all have learned from the Matt Godino story."
The Commissioner is expected to make an announcement of which player if any, will be called up this afternoon... Stay tuned...
